Seventy nine percent of Ohio parents see afterschool programs as a safe space for their child to go. Another 88% believe these programs help students build essential life skills — everything from responsible decision-making to navigating friendships. These programs are foundational.
As one former out-of-school time leader, Manny Padia, put it:
“Not every kid has both parents at home. Not every kid has somebody waiting for them at home after school.”
He’s right. And the latest America After 3PM report confirms what families and educators already know: afterschool programs are lifelines.
Right now, too many Ohio kids don’t have one.
Demand for afterschool programs has never been higher — yet access is slipping further out of reach.
- 957,805 Ohio children want afterschool opportunities
- Only 137,561 are enrolled
- More than five out of six Ohio kids who want programs can’t get in
Nationwide, the number climbs to 22 million students who would participate if a program were available.
Ohio families report the same systemic obstacles year after year:
- Cost: 50% say programs are too expensive
- Transportation: 48% lack a safe way to get their child there and back
- Availability: 41–45% say programs are too far away or simply don’t exist
- Waitlists: 24% have been waitlisted; 63% waited over a month
Despite this, parents are overwhelmingly supportive:
- 94% say afterschool programs reduce their stress
- 75% say they help them keep their jobs
- 90% believe they positively impact their child’s overall well-being
Afterschool is a workforce stabilizer, a mental-health support system, and a safety net.
The Equity Gap Is Widening
Higher-income families continue to participate at dramatically higher rates — and they’re now spending nine times more on out-of-school activities than low-income families.
As federal funding stagnates and local resources thin, the gap between who has afterschool access and who doesn’t grows wider.
Lack of access to these proven-effective out-of-school learning opportunities is actually an economic threat.
