DreamSTEM Externship Program Launches at Three Organizations
CLEVELAND – Four area educators have been chosen to complete DreamSTEM’s first summer externship program at three area organizations. Program participants will spend one month at their assigned organization for an immersive, hands-on experience intended to heighten and deepen their knowledge of available careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
The goal of the program is for educators to take what they learn back to the students and families they serve to increase awareness of and pathways to the many and varied STEM careers in Northeast Ohio.
Participants in the 2021 DreamSTEM program include:
- Anita Rice, a media and school support staff member with Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) who will be working at Invacare to better understand how medical devices are designed, manufactured and taken to market.
- Dr. Vivian Lee, a biology teacher at CMSD’s Benjamin O. Davis Aerospace and Maritime High School and Adam Holtz, a science teacher and coordinator with CMSD’s Orchard STEM School will be joining the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District for exploration of the many STEM careers there.
- Chelcee Schoenbaechler, a math teacher with Akron Public School’s Innes Middle School, will be joining Synthomer for an immersion into the world of polymers and a study of the various STEM professionals needed at that organization.
The inaugural Summer 2021 DreamSTEM summer externship program, which begins June 28, will serve as a pilot for a larger program to launch in Summer 2022.
The educators will present their findings at a public presentation organized by NeoSTEM in early Fall 2021.The educator externship is one of several initiatives resulting from the work of the DreamSTEM planning team, formed to increase the visibility and accessibility of STEM careers in Northeast Ohio for Black and Latinx students. DreamSTEM is an initiative of the NeoSTEM Ecosystem.
